Aditus Foundation, NGO Repubblika and the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation have called for the immediate resignation of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri over the alleged false identity cards issued by Identita agency.
In a statement on Friday, the foundations said that they are deeply alarmed by the recent revelations surrounding scandals at Identita. The agency had denied that it issued thousands of ID cards to foreign nationals in an illegal manner.
“These serious accusations of forgery, misuse of personal data, and human trafficking are a stark reminder of the pervasive corruption plaguing Malta’s public service. This institutionalised nepotism undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in Malta’s public entities,” the statement read.
The Civil Society said that the alleged activities constitute a severe breach of public trust with potentially devastating consequences for vulnerable individuals who may have fallen victim to exploitation.
“They also underscore the pressing need to protect victims of trafficking, often left voiceless and exposed when public institutions fail to ensure their well-being,” they said.
The Civil Society also expressed their solidarity with all public servants working diligently and in good faith, striving to uphold the values of integrity and transparency in the face of systemic corruption.
“In the light of so many shocking revelations, anything shorter than the highest form of accountability is an affront to the entire nation. We therefore call for the immediate resignation of the Minister of Home Affairs, Security and Employment,” the Civil Society said.
They said that they also expected to see full and effective investigations into all allegations, with all perpetrators to be brought to justice.
