The government, through the Ministry for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector and the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, said that it is closely monitoring the developments in the case of Daniel Joe Meli.
"While it is essential to unreservedly respect the judicial process, which is currently at the stage of a Constitutional Appeal, the government is taking into account the judgments already delivered by the Maltese Courts, as well as the declarations regarding Mr Meli's health, considering the unique nature and legal complexities of the situation," it said in a statement.
Daniel Meli is to be extradited to the US where he is wanted for offering to sell malware products, including the Pegasus remote access trojan (RAT), over the dark web.
Meli's extradition had been requested by the Northern District of Georgia following his indictment in December 2023, for computer access, damage and interception-related offences. Meli was arrested in Malta last February. Meli lost his appeal against extradition and has now filed constitutional proceedings. His parents had, in an interview with MaltaToday, said that their son struggled from anxiety and depression for years. The newspaper quoted his parents as saying: "We hope the government understands that there is a case to be made for Daniel to serve time in Malta, not the United States, if he is found guilty."
