A motion to condemning Nationalist Party MP Karol Aquilina over statements made towards the Speaker of the House, and in support of the work of Speaker Anglu Farrugia was passed in Parliament on Wednesday, with 37 voting in favour and none voting against.
The Nationalist Party chose not to participate in the vote regarding this motion as an act of protest, with Opposition Leader Bernard Grech saying prior to walking out that the PN has been clear and consistently chose not to participate in discussions on the motion. He remarked that the PN wants nothing to do with a motion which he said is only being put forward to censure the Opposition in parliament.
Grech said that the motion is not just an attack on the Opposition, but also on the people that the Opposition in parliament is representing. "This vote is against democracy," he said.
Following the PN's exit from the Chamber, Farrugia stated that he would also be stepping out as part of the motion concerned his role as Speaker of the House. The Deputy Speaker, David Agius, is a PN MP and therefore was also not present in the room, and so Labour Party MP Michael Farrugia took over in the Speaker's stead in order to conduct the vote.
Outside of Parliament, Bernard Grech said that it was a censure of the opposition, and a "fascist attack. An attack not only on the opposition but on all those who are represented by the opposition in Parliament. It is an attack on their voice."
