A 29-year-old man died on Tuesday after finding himself in difficulty while swimming in Dwejra in Gozo.

The man was a Ukrainian national.  Police said that the accident happened at around 1:30pm in the Dwejra Bay in San Lawrenz, Gozo.

Police went on site and people pointed out the zone where the man was last seen in the sea.  Assistance from the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta was sought.

Some three hours later, a body was seen in the sea and was brought ashore in the Mgarr harbour where it was confirmed that it was the same man reported to have been in difficulty.

Duty magistrate Simone Grech is leading an inquiry while police investigations continue.
