A driver has died after a truck and a van were involved in a collision in Zebbug on Tuesday morning, the police said.

The accident took place at 10am in Mdina Road.

It involved an Isuzu ELF van driven by a 40-year-old Indian man resident in Hamrun and a DAF truck driven by a 61-year-old man of Tarxien.

The Isuzu driver, who was trapped in the vehicle, was released by members of the Civil Protection Department and taken to hospital with serious injuries, and he died some time later.

He was later identified as Balu Ganesh Balakrisha.

Magistrate Joseph Mifsud is leading an inquiry.

One of the vehicles was carrying rubbish which ended up scattered all over the road after the impact.

The accident led to traffic chaos in the area, with Transport Malta urging drivers to seek different routes.

Both lanes are currently closed, Transport Malta said. The southbound route near the St. Dorothy's School roundabout is also closed, with traffic being redirected through Central Link, Attard, and northbound via a service road.
