A 36-year-old man from Somalia was arrested by police in Marsa, in connection with drug trafficking.
A police statement said that through continuous surveillance by the police, and after receiving information that drug trafficking was allegedly taking place at a residence on Doublet Street, the police began monitoring the residence for suspicious movements.
On Monday, the police observed the man leaving the residence and followed him until they noticed him handing over some packages to individuals and receiving money in return.
The Somali man was stopped by police on Azzopardi Street while in the presence of another man.
A search was conducted, and he was found in possession of what is believed to be cannabis and cash. A search of the other man revealed a quantity of suspected cannabis, which he allegedly had just purchased from the Somali.
He was arrested and taken to the police station to assist with the investigation.
While the 36-year-old Somali was also arrested, the police continued their investigation at his residence, where a further search led to the discovery of a quantity of what is believed to be cocaine and cannabis, along with various other items related to drug trafficking and a sum of cash.
Magistrate Dr. Anthony Agius Bonniċi LL.D. was informed of the case and has opened an inquiry.
The Somali man is being held in the police lock-up in Floriana and is expected to appear in court today at around 12:30pm before Magistrate Dr. Caroline Farrugia Frendo LL.D.
