Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg has been voted by Labour party delegates as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs, while PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba has been voted in as the party's Deputy Leader for Party Affairs.
Borg was the sole candidate for this position and needed 50% +1 votes to be appointed. He received 95.8% of the votes, which equates to 678 party delegates voting yes. 30 voting against his nomination and 13 delegates abstained.
In terms of voter turnout for the internal elections in general, the party said that 95.11% of those eligible to vote, being the PL delegates, cast their votes.
"Thank you from my heart! I am honoured by the trust of the delegates to continue serving the Labour Party and our country," Borg posted in a short comment on Facebook.
Borg is also in line to become Deputy Prime Minister, a role attached to deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, replacing Chris Fearne who announced he was stepping down in May after being charged in connection with the Vitals' hospitals deal.
Voting took place between 8pm and 11pm on Friday at Labour's headquarters in Hamrun and the Sannat PL club in Gozo, and on Saturday 14 September at the same places between 9am to 2pm in Hamrun and 9am to 1pm in Gozo.

PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba was voted in as the Deputy Leader for Party Affairs with 92.3% of the vote. 635 delegates voted in favour of him taking up the role, 53 voted against, 28 abstained and 5 votes were invalid.
Agius Saliba was the sole contender for the other PL Deputy Leader post, that of Party Affairs.
Labour delegates had previously voted in favour of statutory changes which again allowed a sitting MP or MEP to contest the role of deputy leader for party affairs, which prompted Agius Saliba to contest in place of Daniel Micallef, who announced his resignation from the role following the EU Parliament and local council elections.
In a short statement delivered to the press after his election, Borg said that "today marks an important phase in the renewal of the Labour Party as the delegates enthusiastically participated in this democratic process. We had, above all, a chance to listen to them in the weeks and months that passed." Borg said that he wasn't only referring to himself and Agius Saliba, but to the structures of the Labour Party.
He said that with humility he welcomes this responsibility that has been bestowed upon him. "I am convinced, and I believe that together with Prime Minister Robert Abela and Alex Agius Saliba we will continue providing the best policies for this country, as we did over the past 11 years and improve where there were shortcomings." He said that the PL remains the biggest political force in the country.
Both he and Agius Saliba thanked the PL delegates.
Agius Saliba said that delegates "came out in numbers. I think it was one of the highest number of delegates that came out to participate, as delegates and activists participated in long consultations we had over the past weeks where, at the end of the day, everyone can speak in a free environment to see where we can, together, take the Labour Party. My first thanks is to them, who participated in this renewal process." He described it as an important process for the Labour Party. "Thankyou also for the strong vote of confidence in me and Ian Borg."
"I believe the PL continued strengthening its leadership," he said.
"The main message was one, that we continue renewing to strengthen the party not only to win the next general election, but so that as a party we continue renewing, strengthening and at the end of the day address a section of the electorate that in the last two electoral tests showed that they are distancing themselves a bit from the party. The biggest challenge we will have as an administration is to renew, see to it that there is improvement, build on the good that we have, address the shortcomings we have so that we would see a stronger discussion here in the PL, in the conferences and meetings we have as a party to strengthen our structures further," and to use the resources and talent the party has are used without distinction, he said. "That will be my priority," Agius Saliba said, "to consolidate and make the PL an engine of work throughout the whole legislature."
The role of Labour party president will go to Alex Sciberras, who beat Norma Saliba by a slim margin.
The other position for which voting is taking place are for the position of Vice President of the party, International Secretary, Organisational Secretary, and for the 12 members on the National Executive committee.
