NGOs unveil activities marking seventh anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder

Repubblika and #occupyjustice are marking the seventh anniversary of the death of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a journalist who fought against corruption and organized crime.

During this year's activities, Repubblika will launch a Strategy and Manifesto against corruption entitled "We Defend Integrity." A new documentary titled "Untangling the Mafia State," produced by journalists Julian Delia and Michael Kaden, will also be inaugurated, Repubblika said in a statement.

The activities will culminate on Wednesday, October 16, with a Silent Vigil in Bidnija at the time and place of Daphne Caruana Galizia's death, followed by a demonstration in the evening in Valletta, starting near Parliament and ending with a vigil at the Great Siege Square.

At the vigil, Françoise Laborde, a prominent French television journalist and a women's and minority rights activist, and Tiberio Bentivoglio, an Italian trader who refused to collaborate with the mafia, will speak. Bentivoglio faced threats and survived an assassination attempt, and now works against organized crime.

The President of Repubblika, Vicki Ann Cremona, said: "Justice has not yet been done for Daphne Caruana Galizia, and until this happens, we have a duty to insist that it does. Even less justice has been done for our country, which continues to suffer the consequences of the corruption that Daphne exposed. It is our duty as Maltese people to find ways together to carry responsibility for the worst evils committed in our country, to learn from it, and to build a country for our children that wants what is right."

On behalf of #occupyjustice, Louiselle Vassallo said: "Justice is our duty as well. Daphne did not wait for the authorities to do what is right. She did not wash her hands of indifference when the corrupt and criminals seized power. Instead, she exposed and challenged them, risking her life. Her example inspires us. It is our duty to remember her example as we fight for justice for her and for Malta."

The organizers are appealing to the public to participate in these memorial activities and help cover the costs by donating on the crowdfunding site fundrazr.com/Daphne-7Years.
