The Msida Local Council has declared itself to be against the construction of a flyover over the centre of the locality as part of the Msida Creek Project.

Following a vote taken on 8 October 2024, the Msida councillors issued a statement to object Infrastructure Malta's (IM) proposal to construct a flyover as part of the Msida Creek Project, demanding that the agency halt this flyover's plans altogether, and called for IM to find an alternative solution with them via dialogue.

On the latter, the Msida Local Council requested that it and IM discuss what could be done instead of the flyover proposal. It said that the aim of this alternative should be to reduce traffic in the centre of Msida, not increase it. The local council also pointed out that this new option, whatever it may be, should safeguard the health and welfare of the locality's residents.

This vote reportedly passed in the council with five votes in favour and four votes against the motion.

The councillors who voted in favour of this motion were Msida mayor Charles Selvaggi, as well as Christine Amaira, Maurice Agius, Chris Borg, and Alfred Farrugia; all five were elected on the PN ticket.

The councillors who voted against this motion were the remaining four councillors - Margaret Baldacchino Cefai, Jean Claude Borg, Nicholas Chircop, and Andrew Mallia; all of whome were elected on the PL ticket.

"The council remains absolutely in favour of the rest of the project including the open spaces," it declared.

In its statement, the Msida Local Council said that the construction of a flyover in the centre of Msida "goes against the interests of the locality and the health and welfare of Msida residents."

"The absolute majority of Msida residents are against building a flyover in the centre of Msida as the Malta Infrastructure Agency is proposing to build," the local council wrote.

It continued that during a consultation meeting, Infrastructure Malta officials had clarified that this flyover is not expected to reduce traffic levels in the locality and that after the development of this infrastructure, another flyover would require building to alleviate the bottleneck near the Msida Skate Park.
