The 30 elderly residents of the Apap Institute residential home in Santa Venera are to be relocated to another elderly home in Bugibba, the Archdiocese of Malta said on Thursday.
The Archdiocese said that this development has happened following a decision made by the Dominican Sisters, who handle the administration of the Apap Institute residential home, who can no longer continue with this initiative due to the age of the nuns, as well as the lack of vocations and resources needed to repair the 80 year old building.
With that said, the Archdiocese stated that the nuns will continue to offer care to the elderly until the end of the year, and continued that the Secretariat for Active Ageing has informed residents and their relatives that they can still apply to be transferred to another residential home.
It added that alternative employment was also found in other residential care homes for the workers of the Apap Institute.
Although the Apap Institute does not form part of the homes that the Archdiocese manages, as it falls under the management of the Dominican Order, the Archdiocese said that it has helped as much as it could to find an alternative for the elderly residents.
