Roaring Voices Youth Company presents Shakespeare’s 'Coriolanus'

Thursday, 24 October 2024, 15:00 Last update: about 8 months ago

Directed by Polly March. Dates: 25, 26 27 October 2024. Venue: Teatru Salesjan

The Roaring Voices Youth Company is set to bring Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy Coriolanus to life in a groundbreaking production directed by the late Polly March from the 25 to 27 of October at Teatru Salesjan. This marks the first-ever staging of Coriolanus in Malta, offering audiences a bold and thought-provoking portrayal of a society teetering on the edge of collapse.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world devoid of technology, the production envisions Rome as a fractured society divided into two tribes: the Greedy, representing the powerful elites, and the Needy, the struggling commoners. With the people starving and accusing the patricians of withholding grain, Coriolanus rises as the warrior who saves Rome, only to be undone by his disdain for the common people. Banished and filled with rage, he allies with his former enemy Aufidius to destroy Rome, but the pleas of his family lead him to reconsider, ultimately resulting in his tragic death.

This dystopian interpretation of Coriolanus mirrors Shakespeare’s enduring themes of power, pride, and class conflict, presenting a raw and visceral performance that resonates with contemporary issues.

Don’t miss this riveting production at Teatru Salesjan, where Shakespeare’s ancient Rome meets a dystopian future in a story of betrayal, vengeance, and societal collapse.

Tickets are available now for a performance that promises to captivate and leave a lasting impression.

Roaring Voices is a youth company aimed to nurture love for Shakespeare’s plays in the younger generations, but also to see them develop their skills and potential.
