Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed satisfaction that Malta's nominated European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Culture, Youth and Sport Glenn Micallef is being entrusted with this 'important and crucial' portfolio, in a meeting with Micallef at Castille.
Abela congratulated Micallef on his "excellent" performance during the grilling by the leading committee for the sectors within the European Parliament, and said he was satisfied that he is being entrusted with an important portfolio for the present and future of the European Union.
During the meeting, Abela explained that Malta's nominee has a significant task ahead, working hand in hand with the Maltese Government.
"The government has consistently pushed for reforms that amplify the voices of young people in particular," he said, emphasizing that Malta must continue to see youth as the driving force behind changes that challenge the status quo and improve the quality of various aspects of people's lives.
Abela added that intergenerational justice, alongside sport and culture, are other important themes the government is addressing, even in the recently presented Budget for 2025, to elevate Malta to the next level in terms of quality.
Micallef said that he will be meeting with various young people from all Member States, while Abela invited Micallef to address a meeting of the Youth Advisory Forum in Malta, noting that Malta is one of the Member States with such a forum.
Abela said that Malta continues to demonstrate its belief in young people through actions, who have the ability and determination to bring forward ideas and work for the common good.
Abela wished Micallef every success in his future work for the benefit of Malta and the European Union.
