The Malta Chamber of Psychologists (MCP) recently organised the fourth forum on the theme of 'Geriatrics and Gerontology', as part of its popular series of fora on various topics. The event was open to both MCP members and the general public.

This event explored key issues in Geriatrics and Gerontology. Moderated by Dr. Francesca Farrugia, the forum aimed to foster dialogue among academics, professionals, and the public. Dr Farrugia is resident specialist in Geriatrics and Board Member, Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta. Her focus areas include palliative care, cognitive impairment, and elder care across settings.

The event featured a number of experts in these topics, who each gave a presentation and eventually took part in a panel discussion. Dr Malcolm Vella, Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Chairperson, Department of Neurosciences at Mater Dei Hospital discussed the psychological impact of progressive diseases on elderly patients, including anxiety, depression, and feelings of burden. He emphasized the need for compassionate care addressing emotional and psychological well-being.

Dr Mohamed Salem, Consultant Geriatrician and Board Member, Geriatric Medicine Society of Malta advocated for shifting from disease-focused care to holistic healthy aging. He highlighted tailored interventions to prevent frailty using a biopsychosocial model.

The presentation of Mr Yaser Teebi, Clinical Psychologist and Gerontologist as well as Vice President of the MCP and PhD Candidate in Dementia Studies, focussed on combating ageism and prioritizing dignity, autonomy, and social engagement to enhance elderly quality of life. He urged listening to and understanding the unique needs of older adults.

Occupational Therapist Ms Maria Bella Borg, who is also a Lead Therapist at Step Up for Parkinson's, introduced Step Up for Parkinson's, which provides creative movement classes and integrated care for patients and caregivers. She discussed the organization's role in tailoring multidisciplinary support to specific needs.

Dr. Tracy Lee Vidal, Principal General Practitioner and member of the Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC) Department, reviewed AACC community services in Malta and Gozo, focusing on dignity, independence, and tailored care through multidisciplinary collaboration.

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion which brought about an engaging discussion featuring audience and moderator questions, further exploring topics presented by the panellists.

The forum granted participants five CPD hours as well as a certificate of attendance. Previous forums organised by the MCP covered collective trauma, corruption psychology, and addictions.

The next forum organised by the MCP will focus on Children and Young People and will be held on 24 January 2025.

The main objective of the MCP is to act as a professional body for the discipline of psychology in Malta and as a representative body for psychologists practising in Malta. It also aims to advance the practice of psychology in Malta and to make psychology accessible to all.

The MCP prioritises the promotion of psychologists' and psychology graduates' general welfare. The Chamber serves as a common platform for psychologists and psychology graduates practising in the Maltese Islands. As a registered union, the Chamber works hard towards the maintenance and improvement of psychologists' and psychology graduates' conditions of work.
