In the last session of the year, Parliament has passed government’s drug reform bill, which is to reform Malta’s drug court, and shot down the Nationalist Party’s pet sitting motion, proposing to regulate the standards for operating pet accommodation establishments.
The controversial drug-reform bill proposes various amendments, as government focused on giving a better chance of rehabilitation of individuals dependent on drugs. The PN called the bill “dangerous,” and favours drug trafficking over victims.
A private member’s motion presented by PN MP Janice Chetcuti to amend the regulations on standards for operating pet sitting accommodations and pet boarding accommodation establishments was rejected.
Parliament also passed a parliamentary resolution to change the conditions of the State's 1957 emphyteutical deed for the General Workers' Union premises in Valletta-the Workers' Memorial Building, allowing the union to legally sublet its premises to commercial entities.
Despite the PN voting against the changes, as it had said it would do, after a division was requested, the House passed the resolution with 41 votes in favour, and 33 vote against.
After the motion was passed, claps ensued from the government’s side of the House. Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia also ordered visitors at the Strangers’ Gallery to leave, following the commotion.
The GWU had said that the vote by the Nationalist Party against changes to a deed that will allow the union to legally sublet its premises to commercial entities is a "punitive bid to undermine the trade union's work."
The union said that the amendment would allow the GWU to better utilise a part of the Workers' Memorial Building and help sustain its operation for the benefit of its members.
Parliament was adjourned until Monday, 13 January, 2025.
