The Parliamentary Group and the National Executive of the Labour Party approved the nomination for Dr Ramona Attard to be co-opted as a member of Parliament, the party said in a statement.
She will replace Randolph Debattista who recently stepped down.
"Ramona Attard is a graduate in Law and practices as a Lawyer in Court. She began her career as a ONE News journalist, presenter and producer from 2010 to 2020."
"In 2020, she was appointed as President of the Labour Party, where she held office for four years, during which she worked closely in the administration of the Prime Minister and Labour Leader Robert Abela," the PL said.
"As President of the Labour Party she pushed several reforms, including the IVF which was a major pledge in the electoral manifesto of the 2022 General Election, which was implemented in the first hundred days of the new Labour Government," the party said.
Prime Minister Robert Abela had previously described her as a progressive liberal voice who worked for minorities.
During her outgoing speech as PL President in September, she had condemned those using the Standards Commissioner role to "attack" Ministers and their wives for being given a role for their competency. "The Standards Commissioner role is important and we did well in creating it, but it was not created to scare. It is time for a revision of the role so that abuse can be stopped, and it is not used as a tool of intimidation," she had said. Attard had also controversially said that it was a mistake to remove prison sentences for criminal libel.
