Gozo should have five MPs elected, with other regions in Malta having 10 for a total of 45, Momentum said Friday.
It was reacting to proposals for an electoral reform presented by the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.
Chairperson Arnold Cassola stated: "we believe that the Chamber proposal can form a good basis to work on.
"The Chamber is proposing 5 electoral districts electing 9 MPs each. A suggested amendment, also in order to preserve Gozo's special identity, is not to couple it with areas in Malta.
"What we propose is that Gozo remains a region on its own and elects 5 MPs. The other four regions in Malta will elect 10 MPs each, " Cassola said. This means that Gozo will be slightly overrepresented proportionately, but the Gozitans deserve this because of their double insularity status. On the other hand, the four Maltese regions will retain the confines defined in 2019 and elect 10 MPs each. This will lower the district threshold from 16.6% to 9%.
Though still high by European standards and comparable only to Turkey, we at Momentum are ready to go for it and to propose it to Her Excellency, the President, at our forthcoming meeting, Cassola said.
