Under Byron Camilleri's leadership, the Ministry of National Security has turned into a Ministry of National Insecurity and Inhumane Treatment, Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech said Saturday.
Grech stated that the Ombudsman's report confirmed what the Opposition has been saying for a long time - that the management of Corradino Prison under Alex Dalli, whom Byron Camilleri defended for years, was inhumane.
Bernard Grech emphasised that this is not an isolated case and that, in recent months, apart from this, the Minister has been involved in several other scandals in areas under his responsibility.
Among these are:
- The scandal of more than 18,000 ID cards issued irregularly with false addresses
- The extension of Angelo Gafà's contract as Police Commissioner, which left the Force without the necessary resources to function properly
- Corruption involving LESA citations
The Leader of the Nationalist Party stated that, worse still, Byron Camilleri has not even shown a willingness to implement reforms, let alone a vision or a plan, Grech said.
For the Maltese and Gozitan people to have peace of mind regarding their security, we need new leadership - one that certainly does not include Byron Camilleri, the PN leader said.
In reply, the Labour Party said that once the extreme faction of the Nationalist Party demanded the resignation of Minister Byron Camilleri, Bernard Grech had to follow suit and say the same.
According to Grech and what the PL said was the extremist faction of the Nationalist Party, everyone should resign. Thankfully that choice continues to be made by the people and not by the Nationalist Party or its extreme faction.
Thanks to that choice the disciplined forces in our country were given the best conditions in history and the best resources, our country is the ten safest in the world, our country addressed major challenges such as irregular immigration, initiated a great series of prison reforms, and much more.
All this is not recognised by Bernard Grech, the PL said.
