Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti has officially inaugurated the Mobile Unit of the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM).
This initiative, which will travel across Malta and Gozo, is designed to increase awareness and promote cancer prevention within all communities, a statement said.
The Mobile Unit will provide information on screening, prevention, and healthy living while also supporting cancer research efforts in Malta, complementing existing initiatives and resources to further strengthen the fight against cancer.
Azzopardi Tanti said that this project demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing education and research in this crucial field. He spoke of the importance of such initiatives in raising greater awareness about cancer.
"Cancer remains a global challenge that we continue to face, and that is why we must keep investing in prevention, screening, and treatment. Through this Mobile Unit, we will be delivering information directly to people, encouraging them to take action for their health," Azzopardi Tanti said.
He said that the government continues to invest in this sector, with cancer research funding reaching €1 million this year.
Chairman of CRIHM Professor Christian Scerri spoke of the vital role of this initiative.
"Research shows that when cancer is detected at an early stage, survival rates increase significantly. This Mobile Unit will serve as an educational platform to encourage more people to take proactive steps for their health. It is another step toward innovative efforts that can save lives," Scerri said.
The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Ħamrun Ħanin, which is supporting the Mobile Unit in reaching as many people as possible within the community through their Sports Unity project.
The statement said that their commitment and dedication are invaluable for awareness and prevention, particularly in the field of sports.
Ħamrun Ħanin Chairman Ian Debattista said that this project is a clear example of what it believes in - that sport can contribute positively to society.
"Through the Sports Unity project, which has brought together various clubs across the country, we are also showing that there is strength in unity, and we are proud that our first major initiative is one that supports the fight against cancer," Debattista said.
