A man has died and another was injured in a crash close to the Kirkop tunnels on Monday evening, the police said.

The driver died on the scene while the passenger was taken to hospital.

The police said that the driver, aged 24 of Mtarfa, lost control of the BMW he was driving in Triq l-Ewwel Titjira at around 9pm, with the result that the vehicle hit a central strip barrier and crashed ahainst a concrete structure on the other side of the road.

The driver was later named as Christ Gatt.

The passenger, also aged 24 from Mtarfa, was taken to hospital with grievous injuries.

A magisterial inquiry led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud has been launched.
