"Bla kantunieri" is an exhibition that showcases the artistic evolution of its creator, bringing together works from 2010 to the present day. This collection reflects various stages of Angelique Degabriele Attard's creative process and the experiences that have shaped both the art and the artist behind it.
From an early age, visual art served as a passion and refuge. Over the years, the Degabriele Attard's style transitioned through various forms, including abstract art, fabric design, illustration, and socially engaged art. Despite these explorations, there was a persistent sense of not having found a true artistic niche.
After years of experimentation, the artist eventually embraced a mixed-media approach, blending techniques such as watercolour, acrylic ink, fine liners, and collage. The collage elements are crafted from original paintings rather than external sources. Working primarily on watercolour and Bristol paper, Angelique layers these cut-outs to create depth and texture. The creative process often begins with spontaneous sketches of flowers, insects, or animals, later arranging them like puzzle pieces within a composition.
This artistic process has become second nature and is carried out in diverse settings beyond the studio. Sketching has taken place in cafés, on beaches, in hotel rooms, and even during flights, where drawing helps ease travel anxiety. The completed pieces are then cut out and stored until they find their place in a future artwork.
Much of the inspiration for these works stems from the artist's surroundings and personal experiences, both joyful and challenging. Some of the most treasured moments involve drawing alongside a child, particularly during a difficult five-week period spent at Mater Dei. Works like Bacteria and MRI reflect that time. Other pieces are inspired by cherished animals, favorite beaches, almond trees in bloom, and self-portraits. The natural world, particularly landscapes, flowers, and the sea, serves as a constant source of inspiration. However, beauty is also sought in less traditionally appealing subjects.
The exhibition also delves into mental health themes, exploring conditions like ADHD, anxiety, and OCD. These experiences are confronted with honesty and vulnerability, aiming to foster a sense of connection and understanding for others who share similar challenges.
A recurring motif throughout the artwork is the dragonfly, symbolizing transformation, adaptability, and self-realization. This symbol mirrors the artist's continuous journey of growth, learning, and shifting perspectives.
Beyond personal experiences, the work engages with social and political issues. Pieces like Il-Palestina, Aqta' Fjura u Ibni Kamra, and Justice for Jean Paul Sofia reflect a commitment to activism, using visual art as a medium for expression and resistance.
The playful, childlike quality present in some of the pieces is influenced by interactions with students, as well as the enduring inner child of the artist. This sense of curiosity and spontaneity is embraced as a vital part of the creative process.
Central to the artist's work is the circle, representing continuity, flow, and shifting perspectives. Landscapes and moments are often envisioned through a circular lens, akin to a camera frame, before being translated into paintings.
"Bla kantunieri" stands as a culmination of years of artistic exploration, weaving together past and present into a distinct visual language. The exhibition conveys a message that art, in any form, can serve as both a celebration of life's joys and a means of navigating its challenges. Through visual art, music, drama, dance, or other creative expressions, art offers the potential to bring meaning and resilience to the human experience.
The exhibition will be launched on February 21st at 7pm and will be available for viewing from 19 to 28 February at Gemelli Art Gallery, Crafts Village, Ta' Qali.
