‘There is collusive agreement for cases against PM's friends to be dropped,’ Repubblika says

NGO Repubblika said Tuesday that from what it has witnessed in Court, it believes that there is a "collusive agreement" between the prosecution and the defence to ensure that cases against Prime Minister Robert Abela's "criminal friends" are dropped, referring to the dismissal of the case against Christian Borg.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Court acquitted businessman Christian Borg of perjury charges, after the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence to sufficiently prove its case.

Borg was accused of giving false testimony in a civil case before magistrate Gabriella Vella in January 2021. The allegations arose after the magistrate herself filed a complaint, prompting criminal proceedings.

The prosecution failed to submit the transcript of Borg's testimony before magistrate Vella, needed to establish perjury.

In a statement, Repubblika said that the police did not even present as evidence the transcript of Borg's testimony, where he is accused of having lied under oath.

"All they had to do was summon the court registrar to confirm what had happened before another court. This simple and fundamental piece of evidence was not presented by the police," Repubblika said.

The NGO said that if this had been a mistake, an apology from the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner was due, as well as disciplinary measures against those responsible.

"But this was no mistake. Their silence confirms the blatant corruption within the prosecution services," Repubblika said.

It continued that this was "a vile act of self-sabotage" by the police regarding a case they themselves had brought before the court because they had been ordered to do so by another Court.

"The greatest injustice our country is suffering is that Abela's criminal friends remain untouchable, while our police leadership is willing to do a poor job to protect them," Repubblika said.
