2.5% increase in number of outbound tourists for 2024 – NSO

Total outbound tourist trips in 2024 numbered 843,902, an increase of 2.5 per cent over 2023, the NSO said Wednesday.

Total nights spent by outbound tourists went up by 1.1 per cent, surpassing 5.7 million nights. In addition, total estimated outlay by resident tourists stood at €804.0 million, 8.7 per cent higher than that recorded in 2023.

October-December 2024

Total outbound tourists for the fourth quarter in 2024 were estimated at 225,141, an increase of 2.7 per cent over the corresponding quarter of 2023. Total nights spent increase by 2.8 per cent and amounted to 1,540,963.

During the quarter under review, a total of 147,508 outbound tourist trips were undertaken for holiday purposes, followed by 52,460 trips for visiting friends and relatives. Most outbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44 years (47.0 per cent), followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket (30.2 per cent).

Outbound tourists towards EU and non-EU countries increased by 4.9 and decreased by 3.6 per cent respectively, when compared to the same quarter of 2023. Italy remained the most popular destination, with a share of 33.2 per cent of total tourist trips.

Total nights spent by outbound tourists in the fourth quarter of 2024 surpassed 1.5 million nights. The largest share of guest nights (51.8 per cent) was spent in non-rented accommodation establishments. The average length of stay of total outbound tourists stood at 6.8 nights.

Total estimated expenditure by outbound tourists between October and December stood at €219.0 million, equivalent to an average €973 per capita.
