The Government has said that it has bolstered its water security through a series of notable achievements, from commissioning a new reverse osmosis plant in Gozo to boosting the production of 'New Water'.

"Efforts to advance energy efficiency in desalination have reduced costs and environmental impact, while the implementation of green financing options, including green bonds, is pacing the way for sustainable water initiatives," the government said in a statement.

"These achievements were highlighted by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Miriam Dalli during the National Water Conference focusing on non-conventional water resources for water resilience, attended by various stakeholders."

 "For the past 50 years, Malta's National Water Policy Framework has reflected innovation, and strategic foresight. We have built on positive achievements - particularly in desalination and water reuse - to ensure water security. Now, we must take the next step, increasing the integration of non-conventional water resources to remain resilient in a changing climate," the Minister said.

Manuel Sapiano, CEO of the Energy and Water Agency, whilst thanking WSC and the University of Malta for their support in the organisation of the conference, spoke of the efforts done throughout the years to diversify Malta's water supply resources and improve water use efficiency. "The role of this conference is not that of looking backwards, but more that of looking forward and see how we can further challenge ourselves to further develop our water sector. With Climate Change, the challenges facing the water sector will only increase, and therefore we need to continually optimise our water management framework." 

"The conference also showcased the signing of the fifth phase of the Alteraqua Programme which will fund nationwide research, awareness campaigns, and pilot projects for greywater reuse. By championing these forward-looking solutions and sharing its expertise worldwide, Malta reaffirms its commitment to sustainable water management at home and beyond," the statement read.
