Kacey Sciberras Garden — a new open space for the St Paul’s Bay community

Saturday, 22 February 2025, 09:14 Last update: about 3 months ago

The Kacey Sciberras Garden in St. Paul's Bay has been inaugurated, the government said Saturday. This recreational space commemorates the memory of 17-year-old Kacey Sciberras, who tragically lost her life in a traffic accident in 2023.

Kacey will always be remembered as a respectful and beloved young woman who brought joy to everyone. She was very active in the locality's festa and was even part of the Feast Committee of Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs in St. Paul's Bay.

During the inauguration, Minister Miriam Dalli stated, "Through this project, we wanted to keep Kacey's memory alive. I know how much she loved St. Paul's Bay and the contribution she gave to this locality. Therefore, I encourage the public to come and make good use of this open space."

The Minister explained that the Kacey Sciberras Garden is yet another example of how Government continues to create open spaces in urban areas. "Through this project, we are reaching some 3,200 residences within a ten-minute walking distance. Gradually, we continue to fulfil our promise of making more green areas accessible and close to people."

Kacey's relatives attended the inauguration, as did the Feast Committee of Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs in St. Paul's Bay, where Kacey was highly involved.

The Kacey Sciberras Garden is accessible to everyone, thanks to the introduction of new pathways and picnic benches; some of which have been specially adapted to ensure wheelchair users have space at the table. Covering around 2,700 square metres, this open space was created on land that could have otherwise been commercially developed.

As part of the project, children's play equipment made from tree trunks and recyclable wood was installed. Several trees and shrubs have also been planted. The garden is equipped with solar-powered lighting to make it more sustainable.

The architect responsible for the project at Project Green, Perit Cheryl Camilleri stated, "Today we are seeing the Kacey Sciberras Garden at its best, especially considering that before work began on this project, the area was neglected. Now it has been completely transformed, allowing many residents to come and enjoy some relaxation time in a space that could easily have become a building, given that it lies within the development zone."
