The international community must remain united in our efforts for peace, in Ukraine, as we uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Foreign Minister Ian Borg said Monday.
On Monday, the third anniversary since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, Borg expressed Malta's continued support to all efforts for an end to hostilities in Ukraine, affirming that the EU and US share a common interest and responsibility in securing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.
The Deputy Prime Minister is in Brussels for this month's EU Foreign Affairs Council. Early in the morning, the Council approved the 16th sanctions package targeting Russia, introducing more trade, energy and financial restrictions.
"While we welcome all efforts to achieve a cessation of hostilities, we must make it clear that all players, including Ukraine and the EU, must be involved in any negotiations affecting the security of our continent. To be perceived as a credible actor in these talks, we need to come forward with a pragmatic strategy together with Ukraine. We must be clear in our strategy, firm in our demands, and unwavering in our continued support for Ukraine," Deputy Prime Minister Borg stated.
On the Middle East, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised several priorities that require immediate attention, to avoid a return to hostilities. "We must ensure that ongoing developments will not upend the prospects of the Two-State Solution whereby Israel and Palestine can live side by side in peace and security. Malta calls on both sides to continue engaging towards a permanent ceasefire and Gaza's reconstruction," he said.
"Humanitarian aid should continue flowing in to address the catastrophic situation in Gaza," Dr Borg added, as he reiterated Malta's call for continued political and financial support to UNRWA.
On Monday afternoon, the Deputy Prime Minister will also attend the 13th meeting of the EU-Israel Association Council, which will discuss regional matters, including the conflict in Gaza, and Iran, as well as EU-Israel bilateral relations.
