During a meeting of the MCESD, Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said that the public consultation for Malta's Vision 2050 will be published in the coming weeks.
Minister Schembri said that, as promised last October, the MCESD is a key forum where stakeholders are discussing the entire process that will lead the government to publish Vision 2050 for public discussion in the coming weeks.
This was the third formal meeting between government and the MCESD. In this meeting, the government presented its progress in the development of this strategic vision.
Malta's Vision 2050 is set to be built on four pillars: sustainable economic growth, having central services accessible to citizens, a resilient country and a modern education system, and wise use of the sea and land, a statement read. The Minister for the Economy described that these four pillars can promote the "basic principle" of having good and healthy quality of life for all.
Vision 2050 is set to have specific targets set for the year 2035, and not just for the end-goal year of 2050, it read.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, Andy Ellul, added that Vision 2050 has the unique opportunity to shape the Malta of tomorrow. He said that it will provide a "strong framework" that will be built upon in the coming decades.
He remarked that Malta will not only remain attractive to investors, but it will do so while remaining the "natural home" of Maltese and Gozitans, as a place where natives can achieve their aspirations for themselves and future generations.
He described that Vision 2050 prioritises environmental protection, strengthening social policy, and good governance. "It is a vision that thinks of everyone, from entrepreneurs who have opened a new business, to others who are looking to expand their operations, students who aspire to build a life in their country and pensioners who are looking to enjoy life in a tranquil and safe environment," Ellul said.
Ellul also expressed satisfaction that Vision 2050 is being discussed with social partners in its early stages, since this dialogue is providing the foundations for this strategic project to prepare Malta for the future - a future which, he said, will lead to a leap in the quality of life for generations to come.
MCESD Chairman Perit David Xuereb repeated this, before stating that the idea behind Vision 2050 is to "create a framework that not only stands the test of time, but also safeguards the authenticity and values of Malta for future generations." Xuereb also observed that this collaboration with MCESD members ensures that Vision 2050 will reflect the aspirations of the people.
