Number of guests in collective accommodation up 13% in 2024 – NSO

Total guests in collective accommodation in 2024 amounted to 2,550,655, an increase of 13.3 per cent in 2023, the NSO said Thursday,

Total nights spent increased by 14.4 per cent reaching 11,321,251 nights. The net use of bed-places went up by 2.7 percentage points to 64.8 per cent.

October-December

Total guests in collective accommodation establishments during the fourth quarter of 2024 stood at 626,884 while total nights spent amounted to 2,667,363.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the largest share of guest nights was reported in 4-star hotels, with 50.4 per cent of the total.

The average length of stay in collective accommodation establishments in 2024 went up to 4.3 nights when compared to the figure registered during the same quarter of 2023. The net use of bed-places stood at 59.0 per cent, up by 3.9 percentage points when compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

On a national level, during December 2024, there were 323 active collective accommodation establishments with a net capacity of 21,656 bedrooms and 49,483 bed-places.

Regional breakdown

On a regional level, total guests in Malta numbered 598,253, up by 14.4 per cent over the fourth quarter of 2023. Additionally, an increase of 16.7 per cent was recorded in the number of nights spent, reaching 2,590,870 nights. Total guests in Gozo and Comino increased by 15.8 per cent to 28,631, while nights increased by 9.8 per cent to 76,493.

When compared with the same quarter of the previous year, in Malta, the average length of stay slightly increased to 4.3 nights, while in Gozo and Comino the average length of slightly decrease to 2.7 nights. The net occupancy rate in Malta increased by 3.9 percentage points, reaching 59.9 per cent, and that in Gozo and Comino increased by 2.6 percentage points to 38.5 per cent.
