The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Wednesday received the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres at the European Parliament, to hold talks on global challenges ahead of Thursday's European Council.
Their discussions focused on the situation in the Middle East, the latest developments in Ukraine, and this week's Geneva summit on the Cyprus peace settlement, a statement by her office said.
Secretary General Guterres thanked President Metsola for her leadership and the European Parliament's efforts towards lasting peace in the Middle East and Ukraine, and for Parliament's support towards the UN-led reunification of Cyprus.
He also praised Parliament's efforts and role in defending human rights and protecting European values.
Both President Metsola and Secretary General Guterres will participate in the European Council to be held in Brussels on Thursday.
