Saturday, 29 March 2025, 10:22 Last update: about 2 months ago

The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, stated in a national conference dedicated to dementia and dementia care that "every person suffering from dementia still has something to offer," and noted that each person with the condition retains the right to live a dignified life.

"Dementia affects one's memory, identity, and relationships - the elements that make us who we are. Despite the challenges, every person suffering from dementia still has something to offer, and still holds the right to live with dignity," PS Agius Galea said.

Agius Galea attended a national conference entitled "Empowering Minds: Innovation and Compassion in Dementia Care." This conference was jointly organised by the Dementia Directorate and the Active Ageing and Community Care (AACC).

The Parliamentary Secretary said that dementia is more than just a diagnosis - it is a profound human experience.

He noted that on this subject, the government has a clear vision: to create a country where ageing is respected and supported, and where care for people with dementia is personalised, safe and of high quality.

PS Agius Galea referenced some innovative initiatives, such as Brain Health Clinics, the Care4Elders Project, and cognitive stimulation programmes, that show how the approach in Malta is actively changing - not just by solving the issue, but by comprehending the subject in a deeper, more human manner.

Agius Galea commended the continuous support of caregivers, professionals, and family members who dedicate their lives to this care, calling for more.

"We cannot expect excellence in care if we do not invest in the livelihoods and well-being of those who provide that care," he said.

This event brought together professionals, carers, families, researchers, and experts to discuss the future direction of the field of dementia care.

Speakers in this conference included Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela, PS Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, AACC CEO Renzo De Gabriele, the Director of the Dementia Care Directorate, Alex Gobey, and the CEO of Alzheimer's Disease International, Paolo Barbarino.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony in recognition of the contributions of individuals and teams in the field of dementia, including informal carers and professionals who work tirelessly to improve the lives of those living with this condition.
