A Maltese man named Miguel Mifsud - who is dubbed as "the Sober Runner" - has accomplished the mammoth feat of running 100 miles in under 24 hours. His challenge was made in support of Caritas Malta.
On Sunday, 6 April 2025, Mifsud concluded his 100-mile run (162 kilometres) by running 405 laps around the Mediterranean College of Sport's 400-metre track in Birkirkara. He commenced his run on Saturday, 5 April, at 11am and was supported for the 22 hours that followed by family, friends, and other fellow runners.
He successfully ended his run just after 9am on Sunday morning.
Mifsud told Times of Malta that he prepared for this run through the assistance of Maltese ultradistance runner Fabio Spiteri. Mifsud took on this long-distance challenge by tackling the entire ordeal in 10km segments - he would change direction for every 10km ran, shifting between running clockwise and anticlockwise throughout.
After each quarter completed, i.e., every 40 kilometres, Mifsud took a light 15-minute break to rejuvenate himself by eating, drinking, and receiving a quick message to relieve his muscles.
"The Sober Runner" has become a beacon for overcoming drug addiction. After rewarding his efforts on the football pitch through heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy, across his local career in Malta's top flight, Mifsud has been fully sober since 2020.
Last year, Mifsud ran 100 kilometres around the Maltese coast to raise funds for Caritas Malta. He had begun his run in Dingli at 4am and concluded his feat later that afternoon at Caritas Malta's San Blas Therapeutic Centre in Żebbuġ.
