Maternal health is not just a medical issue, but a commitment to life and to a quality life, Deputy Speaker David Agius said during a World Health Day conference at parliament on Monday. The Speaker’s Office said that the theme of World Health Day 2025 is “Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures”.
The Speaker’s Office stated that Agius spoke of the importance of a collective commitment to protecting the lives of mothers and babies from the start. Agius called on authorities, health professionals, and society as a whole to work with a sustainable vision for new generations. He also spoke of mothers who have lost their babies even in the early stages of pregnancy, as he said that their suffering is real and must be recognised.
The Deputy Speaker said that through discussions, the sharing of experiences, and innaotive solutions, the way can continue to be paved for a future where, if possible, no mother loses her life in childbirth, and no newborn baby suffers or loses its life due to lack of care.
Agius said that there should be continued improvement on the progress that has already been made, and that a promise should be made to those who come after, “that every mother and baby will not only have the chance to survive, but to thrive”.
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela, MP Albert Buttigieg, and various consultants and other officials across areas of the health sector also addressed the conference.
