The well-known Spotters Wall in Kirkop, a gathering place known amongst aviation enthusiasts, has officially been handed over to the Kirkop Local Council following an agreement signed with the Land Authority.

The announcement was made during a site visit by Minister for Lands and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli. The transfer forms part of a wider government initiative to devolve community-valued public land to local authorities for improved management and upkeep.

Located adjacent to Malta International Airport, the area offers a unique view of the runway that has long attracted aircraft spotters and families across Malta. Under the new agreement, the Kirkop Local Council will take over responsibility for maintaining and improving the site.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi described the initiative as a tangible example of how national policy is being implemented at the local level. "Thanks to the Lands Authority, we are devolving public land of value directly to the community. Now under the care of the Kirkop Local Council, the area can be better maintained and enjoyed by the public," he said.

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli echoed this sentiment, praising the agreement and emphasising the area's popularity among locals and aviation fans alike. "This space is not just for the people of Kirkop, but for everyone with a passion for aviation. The Local Council's plans to renovate and beautify it are commendable," she stated.

She added that empowering Local Councils in this way allows projects to be managed more effectively, since local leaders are in the best position to understand and address the needs of their communities.

Kirkop Mayor Matthew Agius Zammit expressed satisfaction with the handover, calling it a step forward for the locality. "Through this agreement, we will transform the site into a greener, more welcoming open space that will serve both residents and visitors," he said.

As part of the project, the Kirkop Local Council will collaborate with the Malta Aviation Society to host educational and recreational activities at the location. The partnership is expected to attract more visitors and further reinforce the area's role as a hub for aviation culture.
