Two new magistrates have been appointed by the President of the Republic of Malta, the Department of Information said. They are Dr Tanya Sammut and Dr Monica Borg Galea.
This public call to appoint two new magistrates to the Inferior Courts of Malta was first opened on 31 January 2025 by the Minister for Justice, Jonathan Attard.
The Judicial Appointments Committee received 23 expressions of interest for these openings and assessed all the applicants on 15 March 2025.
Over the coming weeks, the Committee's Secretary - Frankie Mercieca - presented two detailed reports, each on three distinct candidates who, in the Committee's view, were most suitable and deserving for each opening.
Tanya Sammut was selected for the first vacancy, following the presentation of the first report on 24 March; the other two considered candidates were Ingrid Bianco and Monica Borg Galea.
Just over two weeks later, a second report was presented for the second call for a magistrate. Alongside Bianco and Borg Galea, Franco Agius was considered. Ultimately, the President selected Monica Borg Galea to be the second appointed magistrate.
