A new financial support scheme has been launched to involve licensed fishermen in the collection of marine data during their fishing trips.

The initiative was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, during a press conference held in collaboration with the Aquatic Resources Malta Agency (ARM).

Under this new scheme, fishermen with registered vessels will have the opportunity to receive compensation for assisting researchers at sea. The goal of the initiative is to facilitate the real-time collection of marine data by directly involving fishermen in the research process. Through this collaboration, Malta is aiming to promote sustainable management of marine resources while recognising the important role played by the fishing community.

Licensed fishermen who apply to participate in the scheme will be selected according to established criteria. Those chosen will receive approximately €320 per catch under the EMFAF DC-MAP programme. This approach is expected to enhance data collection efforts while supporting the economic well-being of fishermen.

During the announcement, Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said emphasised the importance of sustainability and evidence-based policymaking. "This scheme is a concrete step that shows how Malta is working towards a more responsible and sustainable management of its natural resources. Data collection is crucial for us to make informed decisions and build a strong policy for the future of the fishing sector," she said.

She also noted that this initiative combines the principles of sustainability, research, and the blue economy. By including fishermen in research processes, the government is taking steps to make data collection more inclusive, transparent and participatory.

ARM also expressed its commitment to continuing its mission in favour of research and sustainability in fisheries. The agency thanked the authorities involved and stated that it will remain dedicated to guiding the fisheries sector towards a sustainable and resilient future.

Jurgen Mifsud, a scientist and researcher at ARM, said that Malta has made considerable progress in developing its fisheries data collection programme over the past two decades. He noted that direct observations at sea by trained scientific observers are crucial for gathering information on species caught, their sizes, and fishing practices.

Mifsud encouraged continued collaboration between fishermen and the scientific community to strengthen this essential process. He said the programme plays a key role in ensuring compliance with the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy and in maintaining sustainable management of fish stocks.

Applications for the scheme will be accepted from Monday 12 May to Saturday 17 May 2025. ARM officials will be available to assist applicants from their offices in Marsaxlokk, St Paul's Bay and Mġarr, Gozo.

This scheme forms part of the government's ongoing efforts to modernise and support the fishing sector, while also promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
