The Labour Party welcomed the launch of a public consultation on assisted voluntary euthanasia.

"This public consultation is intended to initiate a discussion on this subject as proposed in the Labour Party electoral manifesto."

The Government's proposals are being made to serve as a basis for a discussion including eligibility criteria, regulated procedures, a number of safeguards, a rigorous medical process, and respect for the person's rights and choices, the PL said.

The Labour Party said that it condemns the disparaging comments made by those who want to use this matter for their own partisans' agenda.

"While the Labour Party continues to examine the proposals and take part in the public consultation, it calls for the discussion not to be politicised and to respect the seriousness of the subject and the dignity of terminally ill patients."
