European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has received the Timișoara Award for European Values, "in recognition of her courageous and inspiring leadership as well as her unwavering dedication to democracy and European solidarity," a statement by her office read.

President of the European Council Costa said that President Metsola is a worthy recipient of this award in recognition of her commitment to the EU. "On behalf of those who value our freedoms of democracy and human dignity, congratulations," said President Costa. The former Prime Minister of Portugal thanked Roberta Metsola "for remarkable leadership and dedication to promote European values both within and beyond the EU and for speaking boldly for the voiceless." He added that Metsola's ability to bridge divides has shown Europeans that their voice counts and that reaching compromise is not only possible but remains the best way forward. "Your voice is a beacon for unity and resilience," concluded President Costa.

The award was presented by the Mayor of the Romanian city of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz, who described President Metsola as "an inspiration to all those who believe that politics does not need to be dirty, but applied love to the world." Mayor Fritz added that in a complex world where credibility of institutions is often questioned she has worked to restore trust, integrity, and accountability.

Upon receiving the award, President Metsola said that "with this award, we at the European Parliament renew our promise: To defend the values that brought us together. To fight for the future you and your children deserve.  And to build a Europe that doesn't just endure - but inspires."

The Timișoara Award for European Values honours internationally recognised personalities who promote or defend European values inside and outside of the European Union.

"President Metsola was unanimously selected by members of a jury panel formed by Romanian Literary Critic, Author and Translator, Ms. Andriana Babeți; the Mayor of Timișoara, Mr. Dominic Fritz; Romanian Film Director and screenwriter, Ms. Anca Miruna Lăzărescu; Music Director of the National Orchestra of France, Mr. Cristian Măcelaru; Ambassador, President of the UNESCO General Conference, Ms. Simona Miculescu and Romanian Judge at the ICC, Ms. Iulia Motoc," the statement read.

During her visit, President Metsola met with the President-elect of Romania Nicușor Dan, being the first leader to meet the newly elected President following last weekend's elections.
