The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ian Borg, said that the Maltese government shall continue to provide humanitarian aid to the benefit of the Palestinian people.
Minister Borg said that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, over the coming weeks, intends to allocate additional funding to strengthen support to the Palestinian people. He described that this assistance shall focus on the most essential needs, such as continuous support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and other organisations providing food and healthcare.
He was responding to a Parliamentary Question asked by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has already approved a donation of €70,000 to address urgent needs in Palestine. He established that this aid will be sent directly to a United Nations organisation working directly in Gaza to assist the humanitarian situation within the civilian population.
In recent weeks, the Maltese State has evacuated four seriously ill Palestinian children, along with their parents, from the Gaza Strip, and has brought them to Malta so they can receive urgent medical care.
Borg also mentioned that for the upcoming scholastic year (2025/26), the Ministry will fund two scholarships at Master's level for Palestinian students at the University of Malta. Scholarships for Palestinian diplomats will also be available for them to study at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC).
The Foreign Affairs Minister reiterated Malta's stance for an urgent ceasefire to be called between Israel and Hamas, in the name of peace; he stated that Malta continues to work closely with international partners while addressing the urgent need to substantially improve the access of humanitarian aid into Gaza, for the crucial needs of the civilian population to be addressed.
