The Life Network Foundation on Saturday commended the Nationalist Party MEPs David Casa and Peter Agius for their principled stand in voting against the European Commission's 2024 Rule of Law report.
While the report addressed a range of important issues, it also included a deeply troubling clause calling for access to abortion to be enshrined as a fundamental right in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the foundation said.
"We are disappointed that Malta's Labour Party MEPs Alex Agius Saliba, Daniel Attard and Thomas Bajada did not take the same stand," the foundation said, "despite the clause's clear implications for national sovereignty and the protection of life".
We believe that matters of life and family must remain within the sovereign competence of each nation. Malta has consistently affirmed the dignity of every human life, and we are grateful to those representatives who continue to uphold this value on the European stage.
The vote of MEPs Peter Agius and David Casa was not a rejection of the rule of law, but a courageous defence of Malta's right to protect life at all stages. The foundation urged all policymakers to respect national identity and democratic choice, especially on issues that touch the very core of human dignity.
