MP Alex Borg will be contesting for the Nationalist Party leadership post, the Gozitan politician announced Tuesday.
He becomes the second PN MP to express his intentions, after former leader Adrian Delia did so on Monday.
In a Facebook post, the 29-year-old said he entered politics to serve. "And that is what I will continue to do throughout the rest of my political journey. I am taking this step with a sense of duty, responsibility, and humility," he said.
In his post, Borg said that he started actively working within the party in 2019. He contested a general election for the first time in 2022, and was elected.
"I believe that the PN needs a generational change and a winning mentality. I believe that a PN Leader must offer these two things," he said. Borg also believes that the PN has a duty to send the message that the party will be forward-looking, "by offering hope and a vision for the future of the country."
The announcement comes days after it was reported that Borg and Delia had come to terms not to contest each other for the leadership.
The PN top spot is vacant after the resignation of Bernard Grech earlier this month.
Candidates wishing to contest have until 29 June to declare their intentions.
