Labour Party President Alex Sciberras in a social media post on Saturday said that the people should be heard and have a full voice in the planning reform process, not only developers.

Strongly hinting the government should slow down in its plans, Sciberras said that the PL "has always been at its best when it was a movement which listened, acted, and delivered fair reforms", and continued that the party should remain true to this even in bringing forward the planning law reform.

He remarked that there is no doubt of the need for a reform in planning laws, as he added that as the situation stands, "various injustices have been created that we should not be afraid to address", but he added that this is a process which must include everyone.

The PL President said that this is something which affects the country's villages, environment, as well as its face that gives it its identity. He remarked that it is not just about permits and changes. "These are things that touch everyday life."

Sciberras concluded that he believes this reform can be delivered efficiently as well as with a sense of justice and respect. "Let us be that movement that not only delivers reforms quickly, but with seriousness. Because those who have trusted us for so many years deserve nothing less," he said.

Movement Graffiti spoke out against the planning reform in a statement where it described the reform as a "disaster for Malta's environment and democracy". It further described the reform as effectively representing a "developer's wishlist", as it remarked that it represents a "full-scale takeover by developers".

The Nationalist Party also criticised the government's plans, saying they will have "disastrous sonsequences".
