‘I simply commented on the current situation in Ta’ Qali’ — Trudy Kerr responds to libel threat

Trudy Kerr has spoken out after being threatened with a libel case over a video in which she criticised the resurfacing of a section of the Ta’ Qali National Park.

Kerr, producer of the podcast The SHE Word, said her short video, posted on Sunday 31 August on her social media platforms, was intended only to express her personal “sadness and concern” at seeing a park she has visited for almost 20 years covered in gravel.

“This is an area I have visited often over the past 19 years in Malta, and an area I very much love,” Kerr said. “In the absence of any public information regarding the resurfacing within the vicinity of the public field, I documented my sadness and concern and shared this on my personal platforms.” She emphasised that the video did not target any individual or organisation. “It simply commented on the current situation in Ta’ Qali,” she added.

Since being posted, the video has been shared widely and viewed more than 9,000 times, attracting what she described as unforeseen attention from media outlets.

Jason Micallef, head of Ta’ Qali National Park management, publicly responded to the video on Facebook, attacking Kerr personally and pledging legal action. “The bullying by some on social media, whose time is up if they don’t want to make money out of it. I will fight it with all my strength. People like the failed and false podcaster Trudy Kerr – their time is over. See you in court, Ms Kerr,” he wrote.

Kerr said she appreciates the Prime Minister’s response, noting that he acknowledged that more public information regarding the park works would have been helpful. She also highlighted that the official explanation from the park’s management is that the graveling is part of an ongoing improvement and regeneration project.

“I welcome the news of the transformation and will be very happy to report that Ta’ Qali is reinstated to a green site and share the improvements when they come into fruition,” Kerr said.

At present, Kerr has refrained from commenting further on Micallef’s decision to pursue legal action, focusing instead on the future restoration of the park.
