Bernard Grech says he will stay on as an MP

Saturday, 6 September 2025, 20:16 Last update: about 10 months ago

Outgoing Opposition Leader Bernard Grech said Saturday that he will stay on as an MP representing the people in Parliament.

He was speaking briefly on party media as the votes for the new PN Leader were being counted.

Grech said that he had met hundreds of PN members, (tesserati) and listened to what they wanted to say, and what they would like to see in the party.

He said that under his leadership, the PN was involved in thousands of meetings on various levels, with NGOs, entities, businesses, as well as citizens.

Grech said that the newly-elected PN Leader "will undoubtedly have the privilege I had to lead this party, but also the responsibility to open the party wide for everyone who wants a better Malta, and that the party can win a general election."

He thanked all the families of each person in politics, acknowledging that their lives are affected, and said that his family will also be with him for his last interview as PN Leader.

Asked on the 86% voter turnout, Grech said that this shows that the party is alive, and shows members' interest.

Grech was asked if he had any advice for the next leader, to which he said that he had no doubt that the next leader will recognise the party's large responsibilities and accept the privilege but responsibility of leadership.

"It will be an honour for me to represent the party in Parliament. We have a large, strong party, with its own shortcomings. My advice would not be for the next leader, but to the people, to hold their responsibility, and after electing the new leader, our work starts for a better Malta," Grehch said.
