Former Steward Malta CEO pleads not guilty to hospitals deal charges

Thursday, 18 September 2025, 18:49 Last update: about 11 months ago

Former CEO of Steward Malta Armin Ernst pleaded not guilty to charges in relation to the hospitals deal.

Ernst, a German national, appeared in court on Thursday and was charged, in his personal capacity as well as a representative of Steward-related companies, with a number of offences including money laundering, bribery, misappropriation and trading in influence.

Lawyer Matthew Xuereb, who appeared for Ernst, said that his client was appearing in his personal capacity, and that Ernst was no longer Steward's legal representative.

Attorney General lawyer Shelby Aquilina's request for Ernst to be tried separately from his co-accused was upheld, and corrections were made to the chargesheet. Xuereb requested that the court minute that his client had not been given disclosure.

Inspector Wayne Rodney Borg testified that he had been asked to assist inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella. He said that the inquiry had been based on an application filed by Repubblika, and said there was no parallel investigation by the police. He said that Ernst was among those indicated as having a case to answer, and that Ernst had never been questioned by the police.

The inspector said that Ernst had held several roles in Vitals Global Health and Steward Health Care companies.

The prosecution asked for a €20 million freezing and seizing order, which was upheld by the court. Ernst also cannot publish anything in relation to the proceedings.

Lawyers José Herrera and Matthew Xuereb are assisting Ernst.

Police Superintendent Hubert Cini and inspector Wayne Rodney Borg prosecuted alongside AG lawyers Shelby Aquilina and Rebekah Gatt.

Magistrate Rachel Montebello is presiding over the case
