PL MPs shot down a request for a parallel discussion within the Public Accounts Committee about the Fortina deal, while another Parliamentary Committee is discussing the same topic.
The National Audit Office Accounts Committee had begun discussing the issue last week.
The National Audit Office had found that the government had pushed through a parliamentary resolution to remove conditions on land acquired by the Fortina Group in 2019 which saw the private sector entity pay millions less than what an audit firm had valued. The report found that the audit firm's valuation had been witheld by the Lands Authority Chairman at the time, and not passed on.
PAC Chairman, PN MP Darren Carobott, on Wednesday called for the urgent discussion on the NAO report. But the PL MPs on the PAC, Glenn Bedingfield and Alex Muscat, said that it didn't make sense to have two Parliamentary Committees discussing the same report at the same time at this stage. Muscat said that once the discussion on the same report was concluded in the audit committee, it would be a cleaner procedure.
The NAO Accounts Committee doesn't have the same role that the PAC has.
