Ian Borg, Malta's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism and Deputy Prime Minister, has stated that he has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Deputy Prime Minister Borg wrote about this on his Facebook page, in which he said that he has presented the American President with a letter he wrote himself to notify him that he, "like many others," has nominated President Trump for the coveted Nobel Peace Prize.
Borg noted that it has been exactly a fortnight as of this Thursday since he met President Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, in New York during his visit there for the United Nations' 80th General Assembly.
Borg said that during his tenure as Minister for Foreign Affairs, he led the OSCE in 2024 and worked with many people to bring peace to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Borg said that this peace "was finally achieved this summer by the American President."
"I am happy today to see more commitment that is bringing us closer to peace," Borg said.
Borg's declaration comes a day removed since Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire and a peace plan. This peace plan, which involves the freeing of remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, was put forward by the Trump administration and marks one of the most significant developments in this warzone in the past two years.
Writing on social media, the 45th and 47th President of the United States of America said that this plan would mean that "ALL of the hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace."
Over the past few weeks, the White House has been aggressively calling for US President Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize across its social media pages, as well as through its representatives. Trump being marketed as a peacemaker was also a salient point in his presidential campaign before being elected for a second term; this point carried over from his first term in which he served as the 45th US President between 2016-2020.
During the most recent UN General Assembly earlier this September, President Trump claimed that he "ended seven un-endable wars." But although Trump helped mediate relations among many of these nations, experts say his impact isn't as clear cut as he claims, the Associated Press had reported.
"I ended seven wars, and in all cases, they were raging, with countless thousands of people being killed. This includes Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, the Congo and Rwanda - a vicious, violent war that was - Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan," President Trump said at the recent UN General Assembly.
Borg's nomination is one of at least 10 others nominating President Trump, a convicted felon. Among those who have also nominated him are Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet (even though his country's border debacle with Thailand remains unresolved), as well as legislators and politicians stemming from Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, and his home United States of America.
