EU Parliament debating rule of law in Malta

Tuesday, 21 October 2025, 13:25 Last update: about 12 months ago

The European Parliament is set to debate the rule of law in Malta this afternoon.

In a statement last week, The European Peoples Party (EPP), which is the largest political party in the EP, announced that the European Parliament will hold a debate on 21 October to mark the anniversary of the assassination of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia “and Malta’s ongoing rule-of-law backsliding. The debate is being held following an agreement that was reached by political groups in the European Parliament.”

“It will take place during the October II plenary session and will focus on media freedom, anti-corruption enforcement, and the urgent need for accountability in Malta,” it said.

Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated by a car bomb on 16 October 2017, while she was driving down the road from her home in Bidnija.
