At the National Stadium in Malta, Ħamrun Spartans made history for Maltese football by playing the first-ever home game in a group stage of a European competition
After losing 1-0 two weeks ago against Jagiellonia Bialystok of Poland, Ħamrun hosted Lausanne Sport and, despite a spirited and impressive performance, they fell narrowly to a 1-0 defeat.
The Spartans created the first dangerous opportunity in the 17th minute when Serigne Thioune broke through the Lausanne defence and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. However, his shot was saved, and the referee flagged the play for offside.
Another golden chance came in the 34th minute when N'Dri Koffie, after a clever move on the right by Hadzi, fired towards goal, only for the Lausanne keeper to make a fine save. Moments later, Lausanne took the lead - Gaoussou Diakite struck from a tight angle, sending a low shot past Henry Bonello to make it 1-0.
Ħamrun pushed hard for an equalizer in the 68th minute, coming close when Rafael Compri delivered an excellent cross from the right that found Koffie, whose header went just wide of the post.
Despite their persistence and fighting spirit, Ħamrun Spartans were unable to find a breakthrough, as Lausanne defended solidly to secure all three points. The result leaves Ħamrun without a point after two matches in their UEFA Conference League campaign - but their historic achievement remains a proud moment for Maltese football.
