A 31-year-old Somali man, Mustafa Ahmed Mohammed, has been sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in a stabbing outside a Msida bar in October 2020. The case, presided over by Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo, found him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and disturbing public order but cleared him of participating in an accidental fight. Time served in preventive custody was deducted from his sentence.

The incident began around 10:20 p.m. at the Eureka Bar on Triq Makna tas-Serrar, where the barman, Yousif Ghebrekidan Fasi, asked Mustafa to leave as the bar was closing. A verbal dispute escalated into a violent confrontation that spilled outside toward Rue d'Argens. Yousif fled the bar but was chased by Mustafa and two other men, who pushed, punched, and restrained him. During the struggle, Yousif was stabbed twice in the back. Although he could not identify who wielded the knife, the court ruled that Mustafa's role in holding the victim made him criminally responsible for the injuries.

Medical experts testified that one stab wound required stitches and left permanent scarring, classifying the injuries as grave but not life-threatening. Mustafa also sustained minor wounds to his hand and shoulder. His claim that he had tried to stop the fight and that another man was responsible for the stabbing was dismissed. The magistrate said the pursuit of the victim demonstrated intent rather than a spontaneous altercation.

The court also found Mustafa guilty of breaching public order, noting that the attack caused a public disturbance. As a repeat offender, having previously been sentenced to three years in 2019, he received no leniency. Besides imprisonment, Mustafa was issued a three-year restraining order protecting the victim and ordered to pay €2,305.20 in court expert fees within one year or face further jail time.
