We must incentivise business owners, not attack them, PN says

The Nationalist Party said Saturday it believes that business owners must be incentivised, not attacked.

In a statement, the PN condemned the "irresponsible remarks" made by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, who implied that a large portion of Maltese businesses and business owners evade tax.

"It is irresponsible and unserious for a minister to make such statements without any clear explanation or data-based analysis, as these comments only serve to tarnish the reputation of hundreds of honest entrepreneurs and companies who work diligently and pay all dues according to the law," the PN said.

The minister's comments "cast an unfair and damaging shadow" over thousands of professionals, including accountants, auditors and tax advisors. This is unacceptable.

The Malta Chamber has already warned that such statements can cause serious harm to companies operating correctly and simply facing economic challenges or other circumstances that may temporarily reduce their profitability.

It appears that the Minister has not learned from his previous unfounded statements in past years against restaurant owners - comments which also provoked a strong backlash from those who operate transparently and correctly, the PN said.

The party said it believes that a minister should lead by example, showing seriousness, transparency and respect towards those who contribute to the economy - not by spreading suspicion about them.

The PN said it is against abuse, but in favour of business. Where cases of tax evasion exist, the Government should ensure that the competent authorities take the necessary action against those who break the law, rather than generalising and painting a negative image of all business owners in Malta.

It added it remains committed to defending the integrity and reputation of all those who work honestly and contribute to the economic growth and wealth creation of our country.
