MP apologises for obstructing camera during Parliamentary debate

PN MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici has apologised for obstructing a camera for a short time during Tuesday's Parliamentary sitting.

Prime Minister Robert Abela was delivering his reply to the Budget on Tuesday. Towards the end of the sitting, the PN MP got up and stood in front of the video camera.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM), issued a statement about the incident. "IĠM understands that the PM's speech stepped over the time limit, but feels that it must still call out the act of obstructing a live transmission and interfering in public broadcasting. Politics is a heated environment but there should be no room for this sort of behaviour in our country's highest institution. The Opposition should have contested the matter with the Speaker rather than obstruct a cameraperson from doing their work."

In a statement on Facebook, Mifsud Bonnici said: "Yesterday in Parliament, as the Opposition's Deputy Whip, towards the end of the sitting I asked the Speaker of the House to make a point of order - which I was not allowed to do. In that point of order, I intended to remark that the time allocated to the Prime Minister had been greatly exceeded, and therefore he had to conclude his speech. This, after all, was the agreement according to motion 420 of 21 October 2025."

"In those circumstances, and after I was unjustly prevented from making my point of order, I instinctively stood up from my seat and remained in front of one of the cameras in Parliament. I understand that this was not the best way to convey my message, and out of respect for our country's highest institution, I offer my apologies."
